In order to make 25 maps in 10 days we opted for a hybrid workflow. Manually sculpting the major land masses for each environment and the rest was done procedurally. In Houdini we utilized unique height-field flows for every biome, shaping the terrain to match desired reference and exported height maps, along with a couple of masks (flow, water, debris, sediment…) Those were used in Substance Designer to get the final PBR textures and height details. Rendering was done in Marmoset Toolbag.
Turnaround time from initial sculpt to final image is around 15 minutes.
